A patriarchal and deeply conservative society

Yemeni society is patriarchal and deeply conservative. Around 60% of adult women are illiterate and most wear the face-obscuring niqab. In some parts of the country more than half of all girls marry under the age of 15. There is an ongoing debate as to whether such practices should be interpreted as evidence of repression or as pillars of Yemen’s Islamic cultural tradition.
