Belgian Eric Gerets has agreed a deal to take over as coach of Qatari champions Lekhwiya in place of Algerian Djamel Belmadi.
“Lekhwiya have signed a contract with Gerets as coach,” club spokesman Adnane Al-Ali told AFP.
“Gerets arrived in Doha on Monday and will take the reins from tomorrow (Tuesday).”
Media reports suggested that 58-year-old Gerets had agreed a three-year deal, as the Qatari champions bid to win the Asian Cup next year.
Gerets was sacked as Morocco coach last month after a series of poor results.
Recruited in 2010 to lead the Atlas Lions to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the former PSV Eindhoven and Marseille boss had been under pressure since the shock 2-0 defeat to Mozambique in a qualifier for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
