Want to take a swim at a beach in Gaza? Think again.

Contamination, mainly caused by poor quality of sewage treatment stations, has made half of the beaches in Gaza unfit for swimming. Three of the stations in the coastal strip suffer from continuous power cuts due to a lack of fuel, which results in waste-water being pumped directly into the sea.

A spokesman for the Palestinian environmental authority told Ma’an News Agency that the agency has contacted concerned parties and lifeguards, and that maps explaining which beaches are safe will be posted in public areas.
