Algerian blogger goes to jail

Tarek Mameri, a 23-year old blogger from Algeria, has been sentenced to eight months in jail over allegations that he advocated a boycott of last month’s parliamentary elections, which critics suspected had been rigged.

In contrast to the iconic Tunisian Mohamed Bouazizi, Mameri did not set himself on fire but instead chose to burn ballots. He also posted a video on YouTube where he addressed President Bouteflika and complained about the country’s high youth unemployment. The young blogger then picked up his voting card, which he burnt in front of the camera.
