At the bottom of Yemeni society

Over 40% of Yemen’s population live below the poverty line, though few endure worse conditions than the akhdam. Historically condemned to the bottom rungs of society for little reason beyond their African appearance, they are restricted to menial jobs such as clearing the mounds of accumulated rubbish from Yemen’s busy streets. Less treated as second-class citizens than just completely ignored, their class label derives from the Arabic for ‘servant’.
