Kicking empty containers or making tea and selling sweets

More than half of Yemen’s population is under the age of 15, so inevitably the streets of Old Sana’a are awash with children. Some spend their time playing marbles, kicking empty containers or rolling tyres through the streets; others work, rushing around with wheelbarrows, making tea or selling sweets. Most children and adults alike greet visitors with excited shouts of welcome; occasionally, one hears an amicable ‘death to America!’
