One of the world’s oldest cities

The Old City of Sana’a, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on earth. Said to be founded after the flood by Shem, the son of Noah, its Grand Mosque housed the oldest known copy of the Qur’an. Former President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s $63 million mosque glints in the background; despite widespread daily blackouts, its lights never go out.
