The noisy hub of Bab al-Yemen

The only survivor of the seven ancient gates leading into Old Sana’a, Bab al-Yemen remains a noisy hub of activity as merchants attempt to sell wares of every description, day and night. Sports jackets, traditional jambiya with curved blades and sticky dates are sold alongside soap and toy guns. The gate, over 700 years old, displays signs of historic wear; most recently, damage includes a few bullet marks and a crumbling hole from an RPG fired during last year’s anti-regime uprising.
