JR started out as a graffiti artist in Paris. Having won the prestigious TED Award in 2011, he went on a journey that would allow unheard voices to be seen.
The Inside Out Project, which is currently being turned into a HBO documentary, gives people in countries such as Tunisia, Liberia and Sierra Leone a chance to exhibit self-portraits in their own communities.
As a first stop, JR went to Tunisia.
“Post-revolution Tunisia is the first action of the Inside Out Project. Six native photographers traveled the country capturing portraits illustrating the rich diversity of Tunisian society,” the artist states on his website.
