Israel’s Netanyahu undergoing hernia operation

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was discharged from hospital and sent home Sunday after a successful hernia operation overnight in a Jerusalem hospital, his office said.

Netanyahu, 63, thanked the medical staff and said he felt “very good” as he left the hospital for home, a statement from his office said.

It added that “all of his vital signs were normal.”

Surgery, at the prestigious Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital, was successful and lasted about an hour, the hospital said.

Sunday morning’s weekly cabinet meeting was postponed although a session of a ministerial committee expected to approve the release of a first batch of 26 prisoners ahead of another round of peace talks with the Palestinians on Wednesday was to go ahead late in the night.

The meeting was due to be chaired by Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon and attended by Justice Minister Tzipi Livni — Israel’s chief negotiator in peace talks with the Palestinians, and Technology Minister Yaakov Peri, a former head of the Shin Bet security agency.
